Be Smart – Know Your Heart

5 Ways to Prevent Heart Disease

  1. Quit smoking. Cigarette smoking increases your heart rate, raises your blood pressure and reduces blood flow to vital organs.

  2. Exercise. Fifteen minutes of daily physical activity can improve how you look and feel and also lowers your risk of having a heart attack.

  3. Reduce high blood pressure. Exercising regularly, reducing salt intake, eliminating cigarettes and managing stress can help control blood pressure.

  4. Eat healthier. Maintain a healthy weight. Eating more fruits and vegetables and fewer snack foods will help you lose weight and make your heart healthier.

  5. Reduce alcohol intake. Drink limited amounts of alcohol, if at all. Excessive drinking can lead to obesity, high blood pressure and stroke.
